Since the beginning of 2022, it is illegal to throw cigarette butts on the ground in Sweden and if convicted, the fine is SEK 800. This is something Amir Faqiri believes is not taken seriously by the police. He wants you to DNA test cigarette butts you find on the ground so that the person who threw the butt on the ground is convicted.

"I want people to remember that you can be fined even though the police don't see you throw the cigarette butt there and then," says Amir Faqiri.

10,000 cigarette butts in a week

Over the course of a week, Amir collected 10,000 cigarette butts using a bucket that fills 500 at a time.

He does not believe that any DNA testing will be done in practice, but he believes that it is about informing about the problem.

When SVT talks to the police's press spokesperson, they do not understand the reason for the action.

"We can't tip people anyway, I don't understand why he didn't just go to the dump with the cigarette butts," says Angelica Israelsson Silfver.
