A man who has been missing since Monday on Hamburg's Elbe beach was recovered dead from the river on Saturday. Passengers of a passenger ship had discovered the lifeless man in the water and alerted the fire brigade, said a police spokesman.

Forces would have brought the dead with a boat to the Elbe beach and then brought to the Institute of Forensic Medicine. "This is the missing swimmer," the spokesman said.

Eyewitnesses had observed on Monday how the 38-year-old had climbed into the water and suddenly sunk. The search had been unsuccessfully stopped after several hours. In addition to numerous forces from the police, fire brigade and DLRG, divers and helicopters were deployed near the restaurant "Strandperle". Initially, bild.de had reported on the discovery of the body.
