United Nations, 6 Jun (ZXS) -- Zhang Jun, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, on 8 June called on the United Nations to further deepen cooperation with the League of Arab States (LAS). He said that the relevant special envoys and special representatives of the UN Secretary-General should strengthen communication and coordination with the League of Arab States to form a joint force. The Security Council should listen more to the views of the Arab League and regional countries and support the settlement of regional disputes in a regional way.

At the open meeting of the Security Council on cooperation between the United Nations and the Arab League held on the same day, Zhang Jun said that a series of positive changes have taken place in the Middle East recently, and unity, cooperation, dialogue and reconciliation are forming a strong momentum, injecting new hope and positive energy into a chaotic and intertwined world. Saudi Arabia and Iran announced the resumption of diplomatic relations through dialogue in Beijing, setting off a "wave of reconciliation" in the Middle East. Multinational relations have achieved a historic relaxation, and positive progress has been made on many regional hotspot issues. Syria returned to the Arab League after 12 years, and the Arab League family was reunited again. This fully shows that it is the aspiration of the people of regional countries to get rid of camp confrontation, ease tension and seek peaceful development together.

Zhang Jun said that the international community should follow the trend, play a constructive role, and support Arab countries in independently exploring development paths that suit their national conditions and independently determine their future and destiny. All parties should support the League in playing a greater role in regional and international affairs and leading the Arab world in strengthening strategic autonomy, seeking peace and stability, accelerating development and revitalization, and achieving unity and self-strengthening.

Zhang Jun said that the Palestinian issue has always been the core of the Middle East issue. The repeated occurrence of Palestinian-Israeli tensions fully demonstrates that the long-term stagnation of the peace process is unsustainable, that piecemeal crisis management is difficult to sustain, and that comprehensive and just solutions cannot be replaced. China appreciates the just position of the League and its members on the Palestinian issue and supports them in continuing to play a leading role on the Palestinian issue. The United Nations and the Security Council should strengthen coordination with the Arab League, promote the two-state solution with a stronger sense of urgency and more powerful measures on the basis of relevant United Nations resolutions, the Arab Peace Initiative and other international consensuses, and help the Palestinian people realize their dream of independent statehood at an early date.

Zhang Jun said that Syria's return to the Arab League is not only a new driving force for Arab countries to unite and strengthen themselves, but also a new opportunity for a political settlement of the Syrian issue. China expects all parties concerned to seize the opportunity, strengthen dialogue, actively cooperate with the work of the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy on Syria, Pei Kairu, gradually accumulate mutual trust, promote early progress in the political process, and promote the early realization of a comprehensive settlement of the Syrian issue.

Zhang Jun said that the political process in Yemen has maintained a positive momentum, and all parties have maintained close communication on the resumption of the truce, showing the prospect of a political solution to the problem. China appreciates the positive efforts made by Saudi Arabia, Oman and other regional countries to ease the situation in Yemen and achieve a permanent ceasefire. China hopes that all parties will put the interests of the Yemeni people first, step up dialogue and consultation, set reasonable expectations, demonstrate appropriate flexibility, and promote visible progress in the Yemeni political process as soon as possible.

Zhang Jun said that the friendship between China and Arab countries has been strong for a long time. China will continue to work with Arab countries through thick and thin, watch over each other, promote the building of a China-Arab community with a shared future for the new era, and make positive contributions to lasting peace, universal security and common prosperity in the Middle East.
