"We found that because RT and Sputnik are still operating in Serbia, they are being used to destabilize the situation in North Macedonia. That is why we have concluded a memorandum of understanding with the Government of North Macedonia. Such a memorandum confirms the desire of another country to treat this problem with the same seriousness as we do," he said.

"I know that Montenegro used to maintain political relations with Serbia. Serbia is the only place in the Balkans where RT and Sputnik are still broadcasting. In Serbia, there are Serbian versions of RT and Sputnik. So if you live in Montenegro, you can read Russian disinformation in Serbian passing through Serbia. So it's not so much about external interference in the elections as such, it's about the fact that we need to deprive RT and Sputnik of the opportunity to cause harm inside Montenegro or North Macedonia," he added.

In April, James Rubin said that the future government of Montenegro should join the information war with Russia.

He stressed that the American side has already been in contact with the people who will be part of the new government of Montenegro.
