Six people were killed on Friday in clashes between Senegalese police and supporters of opposition figure Ousmane Sonko, who was sentenced to two years in prison, bringing the death toll to 6 in two days.

"On June 2, we recorded six deaths, including four in the Dakar region and two in the Ziguinchor region," Interior Minister spokesman Maham Ka told AFP.

An earlier toll had been reported as nine people killed in these areas.

Violence erupted last Thursday after Sonko, who came third in the 2019 presidential election and is President Macky Sall's fiercest opponent, was sentenced to two years in prison for "spoiling youth", a misdemeanor related to encouraging a person under the age of 21 to "debauchery".

Sonko, who did not attend the trial and took refuge in the south of the country, maintains his innocence and considers the case a conspiracy orchestrated by the president, who denies it.

This provision has criminal and political consequences: under the Penal Code, this decision disqualifies Sonko from his electoral eligibility.

In March, Sonko was given a six-month suspended sentence for defamation and insulting Tourism Minister Mami Mbaye Niang.

Prior to this week's incidents, about 20 civilians had been killed since 2021 in unrest largely linked to Sonko, while the authorities and the opposition camp have been accusing each other.

Another factor of tension is the ambiguity that President Macky Sall maintains about whether or not he intends to run for a third term.

Sonko, a candidate for the 2024 presidential election, is considered Sall's main rival.
