It was on Sunday evening that surprised Sotenäs residents were able to count home another animal that does not normally belong on the West Coast – a beluga whale.

The whale had swum all the way to Hunnebostrand where it seemed to be stuck in a tamp.

"It didn't have a lot of drive in it and had one tap in its mouth and the other over its head," says Hjalmar Sporrong.

They loosened the tamp so the beluga whale could move freely.

"It went up and down and it looked like it was playing around a bit.

Orcas and walrus

It has only been a couple of weeks since a killer whale was seen outside Smögen, a few days later the killer whale was found dead. It was skinny, had worn out teeth and probably died of age.

But Sotenäs has been visited by odd species before; In early spring last year, a walrus swam into Smögen where it rested. It was later killed in Norway because it had become aggressive towards humans.

Now many are asking what fate the beluga whale will face in the future.

"These are strange phenomena, but I don't know why the animals come here. One hopes that it survives, says Hjalmar Sporrong.
