Change of course in the Balearic Islands. Resounding turn to the right. The PP has improved today at the polls even the best forecasts outlined by the polls and has become the most voted force in the archipelago. The formation led by Margalida Prohens has obtained a clear triumph, underpinned this time – unlike what happened in 2015 – with the other news of the day: the exponential growth of Vox, which goes from 3 to 8 deputies in the regional Parliament.

Along with the 25 seats of the PP, the two right-wing forces add 33 of the 59 deputies and comfortably exceed the threshold of 29 regional deputies, a figure that marks in the Islands the absolute majority, a ceiling that no one has reached since 2011, when the PP achieved 35.

The PSOE of Francina Armengol has harvested 17 seats for the 19 it obtained in 2019. It is not such a remarkable drop. However, the resounding fall of one of its strategic partners, Unidas Podemos, which loses four of its six elected representatives, ends the possibility of reissuing the so-called Pacte de Progrès, the alliance that has allowed Armengol to preside over the island community since 2015 despite not always being the most voted list.

Only the nationalists maintain their electoral quota, with 4 deputies, the same as they achieved in the last elections.

The victory of the PP has also been reinforced by two other factors. On the one hand, the disappearance of regionalism, embodied by El Pi, a party that aspired to play the role of hinge and that will be left out of the Chamber by not passing the cut of 5% of the votes per constituency that marks the minimum to have a presence.

On the other hand, the disappearance of C's, which loses the five deputies it obtained in 2019. Although clearly marked by the inexorable national trend, it is not just any defeat, since the Balearic candidate is the national leader of the orange party, Patricia Guasp, from Palma and deputy in the regional opposition since 2019.

The PP also obtains triumphs in the most prominent urban squares. In Palma, the PP becomes the main force and adds an absolute majority with Vox. In Ibiza, the popular formation will not need an alliance with another party, since it has obtained a qualified majority of councilors that will allow it to control the City Council alone.

Armengol has accepted his defeat and has appeared publicly after calling the president of the PP to congratulate her on her triumph. In his speech, he said that the Balearic government will now depend on "the right and the extreme right", and that his party will oppose the "national wave".
