Since 1974, the streets of Hammarkullen have been filled with people, music, dance and food and this weekend it was time again.

– We have had a good flow this time, 1300 dancers. We started at 12 o'clock and haven't finished yet," said Tony Parath at 15pm on Saturday afternoon.

Dancers from multiple locations

According to the carnival general, there are unusually many dancers this year.

"People have come from Norrköping, Småland and Stockholm. Then we also have groups from Spain and Denmark. Our groups have contacts in both Europe and the world that have been brought here.

Close to cancelling the carnival

Police have reduced their presence during the event this year, forcing the committee to double the number of guards on site.

"It's an increased cost and money we didn't have," says Tony Parath.

He says that there was a risk that the carnival would be cancelled this year.

"The housing company in Gothenburg stepped in and supported us with the cost of the extra guards needed so that we could cope with the police permit. If we hadn't fixed the permit, we wouldn't have been allowed to run the carnival.

But according to Towe Andersson, police operation manager for the operation with the carnival, the organizer is ultimately responsible for order and security, this according to the Public Order Act.

"Historically, it has been very quiet during the carnival and we don't see the need for there to be as much outlet as we had in relation to how it was in previous carnival years," she says.
