In 2023, the public dental service in the region, in collaboration with the School of Health and Welfare, will carry out a follow-up in one of the world's "longest" studies on dental and oral health. The survey started in 1973 in Jönköping and is conducted every ten years. Over a thousand Jönköping residents between the ages of 3-80 will be examined.

"It is unique to be able to compare the change in dental health over fifty years and the study arouses great interest. Recently, we had a Japanese delegation here who wanted to know more about the study," says Ola Norderyd, chief physician and professor.

Declining trend

National quality registers show that dental health is good in Jönköping County. On the other hand, there are signs that the rate of improvement among young people has slowed down. The number of caries-free children leaving paediatric dental care is no longer increasing as before.

The study includes questionnaires, radiographs and clinical examination. In spring 2024, the results of the study will be ready.

– When we get the results from the study, we will be better able to plan and educate for the right dental care in the future, says Ola Norderyd.
