The proposal was put forward in a motion from the Sweden Democrats last year and has been supported by the ruling majority consisting of the Social Democrats and the Moderates. The Linköping List, the Christian Democrats and the Liberals are also in favour of the motion.

The idea is that the residence ban can be imposed by the court as punishment and then contribute to breaking up gang crime.

According to the motion, the request to be made to the government should "point out the positive benefits that a residence ban would bring to Linköping municipality, and that the municipality wishes the government to introduce as soon as possible the possibility of imposing a residence ban as a punishment".

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service can today decide on a residence ban for a person who is sentenced to a suspended sentence or is on parole.
