• Amelie McCann emerges from the dark cloud and sings in public 'Never, never give up'

Portuguese police will begin on Tuesday the recognition of a swamp in the town of Silves on the suspicion that there could be the key to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, disappeared at age three in 2007 in an apartment in Praia da Luz while her parents dined at a nearby restaurant.

"They can look for whatever they want, but I would be surprised if they could find anything," said the main suspect's lawyer, Christian Brueckner, who is serving a sentence in Germany for the rape of an American woman.

It is in any case the first joint operation in several years by the Portuguese police, the German authorities and Scotland Yard, which will also send a team of detectives to the area.

The inspection of the swamp, allegedly used by Christian Brueckner during his stay in Portugal, will initially last for two days, with the participation of divers who will look for possible mortal remains. Several witnesses claim to have seen the suspect in the vicinity of the swamp in the days after Maddie's disappearance.

The German police have designated the swamp as an "area of interest", although according to The Daily Mail there is apparently no clue or specific information that conclusive evidence of the disappearance could be found there, which has eluded the police investigation for 16 years.
