According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a healthy company is one in which management and employees collaborate in the development of continuous improvement processes with the aim of protecting and promoting safety, well-being and physical and mental health. This policy, implemented in some companies, defines Heineken's general principles to ensure the well-being of its workforce, promote healthy lifestyles and create value for employees and society.

With a view to redoubling efforts to ensure the well-being and safety of its almost 1,400 workers in Spain, Heineken has reinforced prevention measures against common and serious diseases with Healthy Heineken, the Healthy Mind project -which provides a psychological care service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week- and the HEI-Life program , which is based on the physical, emotional, professional and social care of the staff.

"Our priority is to take care of our own and help them do it with others. To this end, we have been working for years on our wellbeing policy, addressing well-being with a comprehensive approach through HEI-Life. A commitment that has allowed us to be a great place to grow, a family that takes care of its people and seeks to give the best of themselves in the best conditions, "said Monica Zai, director of People of Heineken Spain.

Commitment to mental health

The pandemic has taken its toll on the mental health of the population. At Heineken they are aware of the need to focus on this field so that their employees achieve the emotional well-being necessary to enjoy life, a maxim that the brewer strictly follows as an essential part of its business.

Thus, the Healthy Mind program is focused on improving the quality of life of employees 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, achieving a vital balance and facing daily challenges so that they do not overshadow moments of enjoyment and happiness.

The reception and acceptance of this project by the staff – which is also offered online for those who telework and is extendable to their families – has been high. This service not only covers psychological consultations, but also offers advice on couple and family issues, work-life balance conflicts, digital detoxification and even legal support and financial advice.

'Mens sana in corpore sano'

To have a strong mind you have to keep your body healthy. With this premise, the objective of the Healthy Heineken project is to prevent common and serious diseases, such as the detection of cancer, cardiovascular risk, influenza or Covid-19.

In addition, the company offers its own medical office that includes a second medical opinion, home pharmacy, private prescriptions and a safe car with the best specialists in case of an accident. These services, in fact, have been very well received by employees, who have reinforced the feeling of commitment and belonging to the company.

In the renewal of the HEI-Flex flexible benefits portal, it has included new discounts on health services, such as genetics. And, in addition, it has started a pilot project of physio-coach in its factory in Valencia to minimize the musculoskeletal problems of the template.

Anti-stress training and 'smartworking'

The aim of the HEI-Life programme is to create the best working environment for the brewery's employees in Spain.

Specifically, Heineken has organized specific training aimed at 80 managers to train them in the creation of anti-stress work environments. The goal? That they are able to identify complex situations in their teams, both personal and professional, while acquiring knowledge about the tools available in mental health.

On the other hand, the current context has led to an increase in digitalization and teleworking, which allow greater conciliation and flexibility. To do this, Heineken has a smartworking model and another series of disconnection measures so that digitalization implies being better connected, but not always connected.

In the professional field, this program is one of the most valued by employees (9 out of 10 claim to be more productive) and most have taken advantage of hybrid work modality, which allows teleworking 64 hours a month, and during all holiday periods.

Aware of the importance of disconnection and family reconciliation, the company has promoted this aspect with initiatives such as its manifesto of digital disconnection: the Digital Wellbeing program, the "green time" -which marks the end of the day- and the time register.

And, finally, the company has implemented in these months the Brightmile application for drivers of vehicles in its fleet, which, hand in hand with recommendations and practical advice, has managed to improve up to 32% their driving habits.

SUMMARIES

The 'Healthy Heineken' program offers its own medical office in its workplaces, cancer prevention and detection programs or cardiovascular risk.

'Healthy Mind' is the 24/7 psychological care service for employees and their immediate families.
