For more than 30 years, the collaborative project Havsresan has gone out to sea to address marine environmental issues.

Now it was time for the eelgrass outside Malmö to come under the microscope.

"Eelgrass is important because it absorbs carbon dioxide and many species of fish are born in eelgrass," says Michael Palmgren at the Marine Knowledge Center in Malmö.

Feeling good

And after today's dive it is clear – the eelgrass is doing well. Usually eelgrass grows at a depth of a few meters, but outside Malmö it is further down than that.

"We have perhaps the world's best depth extent at a depth of 11 metres, which is quite unique," says Michael Palmgren.

Havsresan is a collaboration between the Swedish Coast and Sea Center and Marine Knowledge Center in Malmö and attracts divers from all over Sweden.

"We try to inform the public about what it looks like under the surface," says project manager Klas Thermaenius.
