Ignacio Martínez Mendizábal is a paleontologist, doctor in biology and author of recognized articles in international journals such as Nature or Science. He has also published books of essays and scientific dissemination and has received the Prince of Asturias Award for his findings on the evolution of man in the Atapuerca sites. Currently, he is a professor in the area of Physical Anthropology in the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Alcalá de Henares. Even so, despite all these achievements and recognitions, he still prefers to be called Nacho.

Atapuerca is located 12 kilometers east of the city of Burgos. Inside are the most important sites in Europe and Asia, fundamental to discover how the evolution of human beings has been for a million and a half years. During his talk in Better Connected, Ignacio helps us to understand a little better the history of humanity and how universal values have been created over time.

Shared ideas and values are the cement that unites human groups. That's why they're so important

"

Shared ideas and values are the cement that unites human groups. That's why they're so important," he says. He is convinced that "we are the species that, in evolutionary terms, has triumphed" and assures that this is due to two aspects: technological capacity and the ability to work as a team and share knowledge.

Thus, we confirm that the greatest potential of humans as a species is cooperation, the ability to come together to achieve a common goal. So much so that we even make the decision, in certain circumstances, to sacrifice ourselves for the people around us. "In this very individualistic world you see that the groups that share values are the ones that succeed," he says.

Better connected

At Telefónica they are convinced that the world moves thanks to the talent of people and, therefore, they support it as they know best: by connecting it. From the idea that, when we connect, we are capable of doing incredible things, Better Connected is born, a space in which to be inspired, meet and connect.

In its section Inspire yourself we find testimonies of authentic references such as the tennis player Rafa Nadal, the chef Ferrán Adrià, the Paralympic swimmer Teresa Perales, the triathlete Javier Gómez Noya or the former basketball player Nacho Azofra; as well as inspiring stories, such as that of the entrepreneur Javier Perea, of the start-up Smart Protection, or the violinist Kamran Omarli. For its part, Aprende collects advice and reflections from great figures, such as Perico Delgado, Iñaki Gabilondo, Toni Nadal, María Zabala or Amaya Valdemoro, which can serve as inspiration and learning. A place that, without a doubt, has become an opportunity to establish better relationships in our day to day.
