Nigerian musician Seun Kuti, son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, was placed under arrest on 15 May 2023 for the alleged physical assault of a police officer, Lagos State Police said.

Fela Kuti's youngest son, musician Seun Kuti, is suspected of assaulting a police officer in Lagos. The video of the singer slapping a police officer was widely circulated on social media on May 13, 2023.

Photos of Seun Kuti, handcuffed against a wall, went viral as quickly as the video showing him raising his hand at a police officer.

The incident took place on the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos' main bridge. In the video, Seun Kuti is seen physically attacking the motionless police officer.

At the time, the singer published a message on his Instagram account, accusing the policeman of having "tried to kill him" and his family. It was a collision between their two cars that would have caused the altercation.

Some relatives of Seun Kuti have since said in the press that the singer apologized and even offered a small amount of money to the policeman so that he could have his car repaired... All this before the video even went viral on social media.

On Monday, Seun Kuti went on his own to a police station in Lagos, where he was detained.

The inspector general of police in Lagos has promised a swift investigation, while the singer's lawyer warns of any ill-treatment he may suffer while in the hands of law enforcement.
