The municipality will demolish two properties on Bergnäset in Luleå, but as part of the environmental work, Luleå residents will first be allowed to pick what they want.

"It's good to be able to reuse things that would otherwise just be incinerated or go to landfill," says project manager John Sandström.

This is the first time that Luleå Municipality has chosen to carry out such a project.

"The municipality demolishes a number of properties every year and if this works well, I hope it can be continued with more properties.

How it will work

However, it is not free to just wander in and start taking things home, but the municipality receives expressions of interest until 26 May, and then raffles off who can enter the properties.

Public interest has also been palpable.

– Yes, the interest has been quite large, we already have about 100 expressions of interest, says John Sandström.

Water and electricity in the properties have been cut off for safety reasons, but there are still a couple of restrictions on what people can bring with them from the houses.
