"We should not find ourselves in a situation where we have to consider whether the president can solve the issue of debt. It's going to be a constitutional crisis," she said in an interview with ABC News.

According to Yellen, the government's priority is to make sure that Congress raises the debt ceiling.

"What if Congress fails in its responsibility? There are simply no good options. And those that you indicated are among such bad options," the minister explained.

She added that at the moment, the ability of the US department to carry out extraordinary measures to avoid default is coming to an end.

At the same time, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Kristalina Georgieva expressed the opinion that the US authorities will not bring negotiations on the debt ceiling to default.
