The fact that the Göta Canal is of great importance not only for the tourism industry in the county but for the entire country's population was pointed out by both the government's State Secretary Lars Hjälmered and Östgergötland County Governor Carl Fredrik Graf during the inauguration. One proof of this, they say, is that the Göta Canal is compared from the Riksdag with projects such as the East Link.
New international cycle route
New this year is the inauguration of the Göta Canal cycle path, which will be the country's seventh official and internationally recognized cycle route.
