Floods and landslides caused by heavy rains have killed at least 109 people in the west of the country, the Rwandan Broadcasting Corporation said on Wednesday, as authorities searched for survivors trapped in their homes.

A video on the Rwandan Broadcasting Corporation's Twitter account showed muddy water flowing quickly along the road and destroyed homes.

Western Governor Francois Habitigiko said: "Our first priority now is to reach every house destroyed by heavy rains to ensure that anyone who may be trapped is being saved."

The governor said the death toll had reached 95 in the province.

The death toll, published by the broadcaster, included 109 people, including those from another northern province.

Habitigiko said the rain began around 1600 p.m. local time (<> GMT) yesterday, and the Sepia River overflowed its banks.

The Red Cross in neighbouring Uganda reported that six people also died there, and on the border with Rwanda at night, after heavy rains flooded mountainous areas.
