A statement by the Moroccan Royal Office said on Wednesday that King Mohammed VI ordered "the adoption of the Amazigh New Year, an official national holiday paid for, similar to Fatih Muharram of the Islamic year and the New Year."

The king also instructed the Moroccan prime minister to "take the necessary measures to activate this high royal decree", according to the statement.

This decision came "as an embodiment of the generous care that His Majesty the King attaches to Amazigh as a key component of the authentic Moroccan identity, rich in its multiplicity of tributaries, and a common asset for all Moroccans without exception," the statement added.

It also falls "within the framework of the constitutional consecration of Amazigh as the official language of the country alongside Arabic," according to the same statement.
