The Social Democrats received SEK 152 million from lottery revenue in 2021, from the A-lotteries, Kombilotteriet, Femman and Glädjelotten, Expressen reports.

According to information to SVT News, the government's and SD's proposal to stop political lottery activities is aimed at the Social Democrats.

"We must tighten the money tap that finances the Social Democrats because they have rigged the entire system," Tobias Andersson (SD), chairman of the Committee on Enterprise and Innovation, told Aftonbladet.

"Tried to silence civil society"

Magdalena Andersson believes that the proposal follows a pattern.

"There are also other critical voices they want to silence. Attempts have been made to silence civil society, journalists but also the Swedish authorities.

SVT: In what way is you silenced by introducing a ban on party lotteries?

"It's harder for us to run our business and be a strong voice for ordinary people. What distinguishes us from the government parties and the SD is that we do not get a lot of funding from the business community. Just like other popular movements, we fund ourselves through lotteries.

"Terrible"

According to Magdalena Andersson, it is possible to link the government's and SD's proposals with authoritarian movements in other countries.

"It is terrible that we have such a situation in Sweden where the government specifically wants to target legislation that goes against the largest opposition party. It's very un-Swedish," she says and continues:

– It is a new right we see in Sweden, obviously inspired by authoritarian movements in other countries that want to silence, intimidate and threaten critical voices and thus remove the democratic discourse.
