Skellefteå municipality has received SEK 950,000 in government grants to start up Bostad första in 2023.

The initiative is aimed at people in homelessness, who often also have problems with mental illness or substance abuse.

– This is a first step in a process that will be ongoing, says Iosif Karambotis (S), chairman of the social welfare board.

Proven method

Housing first is a model where people in long-term or recurring homelessness are offered housing while they have access to support measures based on their own needs. According to the National Board of Health and Welfare, it is the only method that is evidence-based and that has a good effect on this group of people.

In Skellefteå, Bostad First will start as a project at Individual and Family Care on 1 May. The long-term plan is to make the activities permanent if the project proves to work in the municipality.
