Pastor Ilona Degermark heard about a company that installs lockers with free menstrual protection in toilets and thought that the cabinets could be placed in the secondary school's instead of the pastorate's premises.

"Then we saw an opportunity to help the young people who are menstruating with free menstrual protection and the school was on," she says.

"Bought out the cabinets"

The church will provide the autumn school with menstrual protection for two years.

"You subscribe to these lockers, which are then set up in toilet facilities, but we bought the lockers for the school. We provide them with menstrual protection for two years and then they can refill themselves, says Ilona Degermark.

Hällaskolan's principal Andreas Palmqvist is positive about the investment.

"It's a good initiative for menstruating people. It's for the students," he says.

City Mission

During the year, the City Mission in several parts of Sweden has reported that young people cannot afford menstrual protection, for example in Östergötland.

"We get stories from families with teenage girls who don't go to school when they're menstruating, because you can't afford to buy menstrual protection," says Sanna Detlefsen, at Östergötlands stadsmission in an interview with MVT.
