The German Federal Center for Nutrition said that the lack of potassium in the body is due to several reasons, including the discharge of potassium through the kidneys due to the body's secretion of aldosterone or cortisol too much in what is known as hyperaldosteronism (Kuhn's syndrome) or hypercortisol.

The center added that some drugs can have a similar effect on potassium excretion by the kidneys. These drugs include diuretics, glucocorticoid glucocorticoids and antibiotics. Kidney dysfunction can also lead to potassium loss.

Potassium deficiency may also be due to excessive use of laxatives, vomiting or frequent diarrhea.

Symptoms of potassium deficiency

Symptoms of potassium deficiency are:

  • Heart rhythm disturbances
  • Muscle weakness
  • Constant feeling of fatigue and exhaustion

In adults, the body needs potassium in the amount of 4 grams per day.

Sources of potassium

Potassium can be supplied to the body by eating foods rich in it such as vegetables and fruits (carrots, tomatoes, bananas, apricots, avocados), legumes and nuts (hazelnuts, almonds, cashews, peanuts).

In case of severe deficiency, potassium-containing supplements can be resorted to under the supervision of a physician.
