• Middle East The Intrahistory of the New Confrontation between Israelis and Palestinians

Six people have been injured, including a 70-year-old man in serious condition, in an intentional hit-and-run in one of the busiest areas of Jerusalem. In the early afternoon, a Palestinian ran over several passers-by on Agrippas Street near the popular Machane Yehuda market before being shot dead by an armed citizen.

Almost an hour later, the Israeli police officially concluded that it is an attack and not an accident resulting from the loss of control of the driver. Hatem Abu Nejima, a 39-year-old Palestinian, resided in Beit Safafa, located in the eastern part of the city.

"Ramadan has already passed for which we made a wide deployment of security but the number of alerts of terrorist attacks is still very high so our state of alert continues," said police spokesman Eli Levi who asked citizens "to be attentive to everything they see suspicious" and, those who have a license, carry weapons.

The deliberate onslaught with a gray car took place shortly before Israel began the events of YomHaZikaron, the day in which it remembers its soldiers and civilians killed in wars and attacks.

In fact, shortly thereafter Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu began his speech at an event on the occasion of Yom HaZikaron in Jerusalem. "A few minutes ago and not far from here a new attempt was made to murder citizens of Israel. This terrorist attack, in this place and at this moment, reminds us that the land and the State of Israel are built with much suffering and tribulation," he said.

"The first attack was 160 years ago and then many more came hoping to win us over and kick us out of here. If they could, they would kill us all. But they couldn't then and they can't today," Netanyahu added.
