The decision was announced in a press release on Friday afternoon and applies from 9.00 a.m. on Monday morning. This means that the operator MTR cannot run if the trains are only manned by train drivers.

"If you choose to have train attendants or two train drivers, the trains can run as usual, as long as two employees with security services on board," says Roger Delin, chairman of ST Pendeln.

The time to rectify deficiencies expired

The trade union ST Pendeln has for a long time opposed the decision to remove the train attendants. The decision on the protection ban comes after the deadline for MTR to rectify the problems that the union ban pointed out regarding working alone on Friday afternoon.

"We have always pointed out how serious it is to remove a train attendant, but without getting a hearing from either the politicians, SL or MTR," says Roger Delin.

In the press release, ST Pendulum writes that "a lone train driver runs a significant risk of being subjected to severe psychological pressure, or ending up in a situation where violence or the threat of violence occurs".

MTR: "Not had more incidents than before"

The employer MTR maintains that the decision to remove the train attendants was taken with safety in focus and the risks have been carefully investigated.

"Since the fifth of December, we have been operating trains without a train attendant on behalf of the Swedish Transport Administration and we have not had more incidents reported during that period than before," says Erik Söderberg, Press Manager at MTR.
