The case concerns the murders of two drug smugglers in 2018. Last week's admissions came as a surprise after a long period of denial. The prosecutor asked for life imprisonment for the four principals at the start of the trial, but after coming to an agreement, they receive significantly reduced sentences for their confessions.

One step remains in the trial, which is for the jury to decide whether they are actually guilty or not and if they are thus sentenced to the new shortened sentences that the prosecutor is asking for, writes El Pais.

The man identified by the Spanish police as the leader of the group has an arrest warrant from the Swedish police after him regarding drug offenses. His sentence in the Spanish trial is two years, ten months and one day. Since he was arrested already in 2020 and served that time soon, he is likely to be handed over to Sweden in principle immediately after the verdict.
