The spy-accused American journalist Evan Gershkovich, who is in custody in Moscow, on Tuesday made his first appearance in court to challenge the Russian authorities' decision to keep him in custody. Someone who is following events closely is the long-time Russia correspondent and friend Maria Georgieva.

"It's a Kafkaesque experience to see a friend and a skilled journalist standing behind a cage," she says.

The court decided to keep Evan Gershkovich in custody.

"What you're doing is trying to create fabricated evidence to go to trial. At the same time, he can be released at any time as well, as these are fabricated charges, she says.
