One person was killed and five others injured when a four-story parking lot in Lower Manhattan collapsed for unknown reasons, New York firefighters said.

The parking lot, built in 1957, is a four-story structure that stands above ground (as is usual in New York, without underground levels) and is located on Ann Street, next to the private PACE university.

Around 4 p.m. local time, the four floors collapsed for unknown reasons and the vehicles were piled on top of each other, according to video footage recorded by spontaneous.

New York Fire Operations Chief John Esposito said his men found six people inside: one dead and five injured who are in "stable" condition.

Firefighters involved in the first rescue efforts had to leave the building for fear that structural damage would cause another collapse of the wreckage; The agents continued the searches with robot dogs and drones so as not to endanger their personnel.

The parking lot was used, for example, by officials of the Sheriff's Office, but none of them were affected, according to the first count.
