Outdoor hospitality professionals are expecting a record summer with bookings up 20% compared to the already excellent year 2022. Camping pitches, i.e. spaces where it is possible to pitch your tent, enjoy a very good value for money that seduces the French.

Already 63 million nights booked, compared to just over 50 million last year at this time. In 2023, camping should still massively seduce the French, while summer is looming. The trend has been noticed since the opening of reservations by professionals in the sector, such as Raphaël Julien, director of the Champs Blancs campsite in Agde in the Hérault.

"The increase is certain. We are around 10%. This is something that continues to feel today. It is the camping pitches that leave first. And then, in the second place, it will be the high-end rentals. And then after the mid-range rentals, "he explains to the microphone of Europe 1.

More than 21 million bookings for camping pitches

These camping pitches where holidaymakers have space to pitch their own tent, are at the top of bookings in all campsites in France with more than 21 million bookings, or 30% of requests so far. This formula is therefore twice as attractive as reservations for mobile homes or bungalows. According to Raphaël Julien, the quality-price ratio of these pitches is an argument of choice to convince the French to bring out their tents.

"In high season, it can go up to 70 euros for two people with private toilets on the pitch. And it leaves access to all the activities, facilities that there may be on the hotel, the water park, animations, shows etc ... I think that, compared to a more traditional hotel, or compared to trips abroad, we remain on prices that, all inclusive, still remain very competitive today, "says the professional. According to an Ifop survey, conducted for the National Federation of Outdoor Hotels, 97% of respondents consider that camping offers a holiday option adapted to all budgets.
