The German Federal Center for Health Education said that open shoes such as sandals and slippers are not suitable for diabetics, and patients should not walk barefoot.

The German center explained that diabetics do not feel pain in the foot or feel it slightly due to nerve fibrosis or poor blood flow, and the discovery of small wounds often comes too late.

This can result in an infection that leads to sores and, at worst, even amputation of the foot.

Foot protection

To avoid these risks, the Federal Center for Diabetes recommended that people protect their feet from wounds by wearing closed, appropriately sized shoes.

They should also check their feet daily with a mirror, for example, and quickly go to the doctor when you notice any small wound.
