Kara-Murza was arrested a year ago, accused of spreading false information about the Russian army. Then more charges were added. Last summer, he was accused of collaborating with the Free Russia Foundation, an undesirable organization in Russia that supports civil society and democratic development, and last autumn the prosecutor leveled further charges against the opposition politician – treason.

Worked with lobbying

According to Sky News, Kara-Murza has previously lobbied foreign governments and institutions to impose sanctions on Russia. He is said to have played a key role in the US introducing the Magnitsky Act sanctions package back in 2012. It also led to sanctions from the EU, Canada and the UK.

The judge who judges the case should have ended up on the sanctions list as a result, according to SR Ekot, which has interviewed Kara-Murza's lawyer Vadim Prokhorov.

The lawyer describes Kara Murzas as "one of the Putin regime's strongest critics".

"This has nothing to do with the administration of justice. Instead, it's about pure revenge," he told Ekot.
