Background

In March, the 17-year-old was convicted of the murder of a 55-year-old man at a gym in central Stockholm. The man who was shot dead was not the intended victim but was accidentally shot when he intervened to stop the shooting.

Penalty

The 17-year-old received inpatient juvenile detention for two years and eleven months. He is locked up at the Sis home Tysslinge outside Södertälje while waiting for the verdict to gain legal force.

The release

On April 13, the 17-year-old was freed in connection with a dentist visit in central Södertälje. At least two masked people threatened Prison Service staff and then left the scene. A witness has told SVT that the sequence of events did not take more than about ten seconds.

A witness told SVT that the men had behaved threateningly, outside a driver was sitting, ready to drive away after the release. According to the witness, the driver was probably a woman.

The planning behind

It is still unclear how the release was planned, but former employees at the Sis home Tysslinge tell SVT that the ability to make calls and surf inside the accommodation has been crucial. Young people at the country's Sis homes basically have the right to use mobiles, tablets and computers. A major problem according to the Swedish National Board of Institutional Affairs, which wants to see stricter rules.

The theory: Should complete murder

According to police sources, one theory is that the 17-year-old remains in the country to complete the murder he was paid for. The police are now looking at different addresses around Stockholm where possible targets for the 17-year-old live.

The police chase

Since Thursday, an intense police hunt has been underway with internal and external reconnaissance. The getaway car was found in a wooded area in the Södertälje area, Aftonbladet reported on Sunday. The police have neither confirmed nor denied the information. No suspect linked to the release has yet been arrested.
