The spokesman for the UN secretary-general said on Twitter that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday called for an immediate end to violence in Sudan.

Guterres spoke with the commander-in-chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat, he said.

Clashes between the Sudanese army and the RSF left at least 27 people dead and dozens injured.

Earlier, Al Jazeera correspondent reported that the sound of heavy weapons shook the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, as a result of battles that broke out since the early hours of the morning between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces against the backdrop of the escalating political dispute in the country.

Eyewitnesses had earlier reported that fierce clashes were taking place between the two sides over the management of the air force south of Khartoum.

The spokesman for the Sudanese Armed Forces said that the Rapid Support Forces are heavily present at the headquarters of state television, while armed clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces are taking place on Al-Ghaba Street in Khartoum, as well as areas south of the capital.
