In the past year, food prices have increased by 20 percent, according to Statistics Sweden, and on the list of which products have increased the most, several vegetables are found. According to cultivation expert Roy Thellman from Valdemarsvik, this has meant that more people have started growing vegetables at home.

Teaching about sustainability

Roy Thellman teaches at the vocational programme in small-scale food production in Gamleby. Here, the focus is on sustainability.

"If you grow in a smart way, you can keep costs down and reduce climate impact," says Roy Thellman.

In addition to growing with sustainable methods, he thinks you should be careful about which crops you choose.

"Carrots, for example, require a large surface area and are cheaper to buy in the store. But tomato gives a lot of return for the money, says Roy Thellman.
