The Chinese exercise began after Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen met with US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy earlier this week. The meeting was seen as a provocation by China, which regards the archipelago as part of China.

The exercise reportedly included both live rounds and simulated attacks on strategically important targets in Taiwan, provoking condemnation from the outside world. At the same time, the show of force is not the first to which Taiwan has been subjected.

In the capital Taipei, many residents testify that at this point they feel hardened in the face of the threat of a Chinese attack.

"The Taiwanese have gotten used to it by now," says student Jim Tsai.
