In January, a new law was introduced that means that all cats must be ID-marked and registered with the Swedish Board of Agriculture. Among other things, it will make it easier to reunite a lost cat with its owner. Until now, it has not yet been possible for private individuals to search for a cat in the register, but at the end of April the new function will be added.

"The e-service has been built up in different stages. First there was a focus on registering the cat, which the legal requirement was aimed at, and then we want to supplement the service with this search function, says Patricia Franzèn, communicator at the Swedish Board of Agriculture.

Voluntary to be searchable

The cat owner must have chosen to be searchable for private individuals in order for the information to be displayed. It is also required that you have a chip reader to be able to read the ID marking.

Are there any risks in everyone being able to search for information in the register?

– Cat owners can choose whether the information should be searchable, if you say no, only we as an authority can search for it. The idea is that it will make it easier for stray cats to be reunited with their owners, the function is not for you to catch a cat and read out of curiosity.
