Beijing, 4 Apr (Xinhua) -- On 6 April, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson issued a statement on Tsai Ing-wen's "transit" to the United States. The full text is as follows:

Recently, in disregard of China's solemn representations and repeated warnings, the US side insisted on allowing Taiwan regional leader Tsai Ing-wen to "transit" the United States; McCarthy, the third person in the US Government and speaker of the House of Representatives, met with Tsai in a high-profile meeting, and US officials and congressmen contacted him to provide a platform for Tsai to make separatist remarks on "Taiwan independence." The essence of this is that the United States and Taiwan collude with each other and condone "Taiwan independence" separatists to engage in political activities in the United States, carry out official exchanges between the United States and Taiwan, and enhance the substantive relations between the United States and Taiwan under the guise of "transit." China firmly opposes this and strongly condemns it.

The one-China principle is the universal consensus of the international community and the basic norm governing international relations, as well as the premise and foundation for the establishment and development of diplomatic relations between China and the United States. In the three Sino-US joint communiques, the US side explicitly promised to maintain only unofficial relations with Taiwan. However, for a long time, the US side has stubbornly pursued the strategy of "using Taiwan to contain China," violated its commitments, and continued to cross the line and provoke in such areas as official exchanges with Taiwan, arms sales and military collusion with Taiwan, and assistance to Taiwan expand its "international space," and constantly hollowed out the one-China principle. Since taking office, Tsai Ing-wen has refused to recognize the "consensus of '92," which embodies the one-China principle, allowed tole, supported, and promoted all kinds of "Taiwan independence" separatist words and deeds on the island, and promoted "gradual Taiwan independence" under a different name, thus causing cross-strait relations to fall into serious difficulties.

The Taiwan issue is at the core of China's core interests and the first uncrossable red line in Sino-US relations. "Taiwan independence" is incompatible with cross-strait peace and stability, and it is also a dead end. In response to the serious wrongful acts of collusion between the United States and Taiwan, China will take resolute and forceful measures to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity. We once again urge the US side to abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three Sino-US joint communiques, implement into action the commitments made by US leaders not to support "Taiwan independence," "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan," immediately stop any form of official US-Taiwan exchanges, stop upgrading substantive US-Taiwan relations, stop creating tension in the Taiwan Strait, stop "using Taiwan to contain China," and not go further and further down the wrong and dangerous road.
