It is SVT's Uppdrag Granskning that has produced figures on how dementia care works in Sweden. Statistics show that if you look at the number of memory clinics and the number of inhabitants, both Gotland and Östergötland are in a good position.

Alexandra Ekengren is acting operations manager at the geriatric clinic at Vrinnevi Hospital in Norrköping. She does not believe that the number of receptions in itself is important. However, she believes that proximity matters. If there is a clinic nearby, it is easier to actually seek help.

Memory clinics are specialist clinics and this is not where a patient comes first. Primary care has the main responsibility to make diagnoses about dementia. Only in more severe cases or if the patient is younger is the specialist clinic called in.
