The research is the first Swedish scientific study on the subject.

"One of my conclusions is that LGBTQ people have been treated very badly in many free church congregations," says Charlotta Carlström, researcher at the Department of Social Work at Malmö University.

A conditional community

In connection with her research report, which is based on interviews and study circles, she has now published the book "A conditional community".

"Many are allowed to remain in the congregation, but are not allowed to have assignments as choir leaders or distribute communion.

According to Charlotta Carlsson, the free churches' view of homosexuality is based on a traditional interpretation of the Bible.
