At least five people were killed Wednesday by a tornado that hit Missouri, authorities in the central US state said.

Footage broadcast by local media showed uprooted trees and destroyed homes in the southeastern village of Glenalyn.

"Search and rescue operations took place throughout the day on Wednesday and are still ongoing," local authorities said, with emergency teams combing destroyed homes and commercial buildings in search of more victims.

According to AFP, hurricanes are a common phenomenon in the United States, especially in the central and southern regions, and are often unpredictable.

Tornadoes and thunderstorms that swept through several US states days ago killed at least 32 people, including 15 people who were declared dead by Tennessee authorities on Sunday.
