SVT has previously reported on researcher Camilla Fröjd, who believes that there is no shortage of nurses: They just do the "wrong" things. An example of how parts of the problem could be solved is department pharmacists. They handle and distribute medicines in the departments they are employed in. The surgical department at Akademiska has had a pharmacist since 2018.

"Since then, we have noticed that nurses can focus more on patients," says Michaela Tollin, deputy head of department at the surgical department.

Departments queued

At Akademiska there are currently 16 pharmacists in 14 wards.

"Demand is increasing and we have several departments waiting in line to take advantage of this service," says Johanna Lannergård, Head of Department Pharmacy at Uppsala University Hospital.
