Israeli missiles targeted the Syrian capital Damascus on Tuesday, state media reported, in the fourth such attack since last Thursday, and left two dead, according to Syrian state media.

Syria's state news agency SANA said: "Our air defence forces confronted hostile targets in the airspace of Damascus."

Syrian state media said the attack killed two civilians.

SANA quoted a military source as saying, "At exactly twelve o'clock and a quarter of this morning (quarter past nine GMT), the Israeli enemy carried out an air aggression with bursts of missiles from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting some points in the vicinity of Damascus and the southern region."

"Our air defense means confronted the aggression missiles and shot down most of them, and the aggression led to the martyrdom of two civilians and some material losses," the source said.

In recent years, Israel has launched hundreds of air strikes in Syria, targeting Syrian army positions and Iranian and Lebanese Hezbollah targets, including weapons and ammunition depots in different areas.

Air strikes targeted Damascus for two consecutive nights, Thursday and Friday, which the Syrian regime attributed to the Jewish state.

Thursday's raid wounded two Syrian soldiers, according to the Syrian Defense Ministry.
