Hans Tengdahl, who works as a manager for a company in Strängnäs and lives on Aspö, is worried about what the shutdown will mean for the residents of the island.

– What happens to medical transport, school transport and if there is an emergency accident? Our fire brigade and ambulance come from Strängnäs and that is not possible, so I hope that they have booked in with Enköping and that they will help if something happens, he says.

Strängnäs municipality states on its website that Enköping will assist with rescue services and other blue light personnel if the need arises. Students will not be offered school transport between Monday and Thursday and the municipality has contacted the guardians and school students affected.

Risk of landslides

Peter Miinalainen, project manager at the Finnish Transport Agency, says that the plan was to carry out the road work later on, but that the situation became urgent.

"We have known about it for a number of months and we have had the road under review. We had planned to do it later on, but it was not possible. We have to do it now," he said.

The reason why the repair must take place now is the risk of landslides and that the road body could go down towards the water. The fact that it is currently below freezing during the nights also means that the risk of landslides is reduced.
