The now very prestigious physicist Robert Oppenheimer was chosen by General Leslie Groves to lead the "Manhattan" project whose mission is to build the first atomic bomb in history for the United States. But Oppenheimer is both intoxicated by scientific research and frightened by the destructive potential of his discoveries. Constantly monitored by the FBI, surrounded by Soviet spies, the physicist is torn between his desire for glory, his desire to master a new technique and his determination to end the war.
