  • Tips How to get your child to read more: 25 books and some tricks that will hook him to reading

The love for books and reading is something that cannot be forced, it has to be born, like feelings: it is felt or not felt. That is why I believe that forcing children to read concrete things is a mistake that, fortunately, we are correcting little by little.

Experts are also clear: we must not forget that reading is a hobby and as such can not be imposed. Trying to find moments of disconnection from so much screen and cultivating the love for books since they are very young is part of the job, although it is likely that throughout their lives they will have moments of disconnection, as in adolescence. However, if the sediment is there, surely later they will resume that taste.

A few years ago I left my nephews -Iker (11) and Victor (8)- what had been my favorite book as a child and... They didn't read it, or at least not the whole thing. They said it was a roll. I loved it as a child and when I reread it when I grew up I liked it again, but, thinking about it with perspective, I can understand that they would fall short: a teenage witch who wants to get her witch's card and who messes up several disasters while trying may not be an attractive argument when you already know the stories of superheroes or Harry Potter, to give a couple of examples. Although I don't lose hope, so I often think they told me they didn't like me because they couldn't like it the same as their aunt. In any case, I didn't throw in the towel and kept trying the other way.

At that time they played Minecraft and that led them to see videos of some youtubers who called themselves the Compas; My nephews talked to me about things and people I didn't know and I couldn't be more lost in our conversations. One day I saw that there were several books published by this group of friends and that my nephews and their neighbor had some, so I borrowed the first one and read it. And I liked it. I liked it more than I had expected because, I confess, I had judged in advance the fact that the protagonists were youtubers. Bad on my part, I admit, and I sing the mea culpa, because in the book I found a funny story, full of action and with three main characters so different from each other that it was difficult not to feel identified with one of them.

On the other hand, Marvel fever also came and with it came comics and superhero tales. If by age the Compas had more impact on Iker, in the case of superheroes it was Victor who got more into these stories, being, how could it be otherwise, Spiderman his favorite. Comics or stories? It doesn't matter, anything goes when it comes to reading.

Today is International Children's and Young People's Book Day and I can't think of a better day to make this list of recommendations. In it you will not find my favorite books, but those that my nephews enjoy and have enjoyed when they were younger. Titles that they read now and others that have done the work of instilling in them a taste for reading.

'El pollo Pepe'

This is a children's classic wherever you look at it. It is a book with very endearing pop ups in which we are introduced to the chicken Pepe. It belongs to the collection El pollo Pepe y sus amigos and is perfect for the little ones in the house to learn new things such as colors, rain, walks or how to face the first day of school.

You can buy it here for 12.30 euros.

'A book'

Colors and numbers are mixed in this book to engage children in reading. I thought it was a fun book to read when my nephews were young because it required movement and participation on the part of the reader. Turn the book, shake it, move it to the other side... An interactive book to learn by playing.

You can buy it here for 14.25 euros.

'Around the world of the ant Miga'

When I asked my nephews which books they had read at school this year they liked the most, Victor told me that this one. It is about an ant that travels in the shoe of a man and tells what he sees in each country. It is a good way to introduce places to the little ones and to know the customs of different peoples.

You can buy it here for 8.74 euros.

'The Empress of the Ethereal'

I could not make this list without putting the author specialized in young adult novels: Laura Gallego. It's one of the few books I've reread in my life and I'm at a point where I wouldn't mind reading it again.

Bipa lives in the caves, where everyone has a role to help the community. Outside there is only ice and cold, so it is not worth going out. Aer, however, wants to go exploring and goes in search of the Empress as he thinks that with her he will be better and happier. Bipa and Aer are not very close, but she feels that she cannot leave him abandoned to his fate, so she goes in search of him.

'Spiderman', 5-minute stories

This is a perfect book for younger Marvel fans. There are several short stories with Spiderman as the protagonist and with appearances of some Avengers. In addition to being entertained and excited about things happening to Peter Parker, they can also learn how important teamwork is. This is another of Victor's favorites.

You can buy it here for 15.24 euros.

'Los Compas and the legendary diamond'

With this book we enter fully into the collection of Los Compas. It is the first book I read of his and the one that begins the series. I have already told before how I got to it, but what I have not told is that I had a great time reading it. My nephews spent months talking about the diamantito, Mikecrack and "my cousin la coja" and once I had read the book I understood everything. It is an adventure story in which the three friends travel to a lost island to search for treasure.

You can buy it here for 15 euros.

All books can be read independently even if they are part of a collection, so I leave you all the titles so you can choose the one you like the most:

The Compas escape from prison; The Compasses and the Chamber of Time; The Compas and the Curse of Mikecrack; The Lost Compas; Los Compas and the .exe entity; Los Compas vs Hackers; The Compas and the miniature adventure

'Timba Vk's 150 favourite jokes'

When Iker found out that this book was going to come out, he asked me very insistently to buy it for him, so on the day of the launch we went for it. I remember he was aphonic that day, but that didn't stop him from telling jokes in the car all the way back home. It is the only book in which they have put post it to get faster to their favorite jokes. I couldn't not put it on this list of recommendations.

You can buy it here for 14.15 euros.

'Mikecrack and the Cursed Star'

At the presentation of this book in Madrid was where I realized the magnitude of the success of these boys. It was crazy, but they made us have a great time.

With this book begins the series The kennels of Mike, who is a nice yellow dog who loves chocolate. In this book Mike goes on an excursion to a very mysterious forest where a lot of adventures await him.

You can buy it here for 18.90 euros.

'Timbalosky's laboratory and the super-secret base of Timba Vk and Invictor'

This book begins by reminding future scientists that, "to change the world you only need a little imagination, some madness and, above all, belief in dreams."

In addition to knowing how Professor Timbalosky and his assistant Invictorpoldo met, we will find different experiments to do at home, which makes reading much more enjoyable and fun. I'm waiting for my nephews to finish reading it to get me with it, I'm already curious to see what happens in that lab.

You can buy it here for 18.90 euros.

'Mikellino's time. Our first night'

This book is fresh out of the oven because it has only been in bookstores for a few days. This time the protagonist is Trolli, who is in a parallel universe in which he meets for the first time Mike, the curious yellow dog that will accompany him in all his adventures from that moment on.

You can buy it here for 18.90 euros.

'Vicnix lost in the sea of Invictor and Acenix'

This book deals with a very serious issue: the water of the entire planet has been polluted. Invictor and Acenix, as good adventurers that they are, have to go find the Powerful Trident of Poseidon to save the whole world. My nephews and I are reading this book together some nights before bed, so we still don't know how it ends. Of course, we are having a great time with him.

You can buy it here for 14.20 euros.

'Rius and Mondongo: An unexpected visitor'

On this occasion the protagonists are Rius and Mondongo, who meet when Mondongo's ship falls on Rius' farm. Between the two they have to try to fix the ship because Mondongo has to return to his planet, but time is running against him. The book has illustrations in shades of purple and prominent phrases or words in the same color to emphasize them.

You can buy it here for 13.20 euros.

'RaptorGamer School: The Infiltrated Feline'

Looking at the cover of the book and knowing that the author of the book is a fan of manga, the first thing I thought was that it was a Japanese-style comic. However, it was not, although the illustrations that accompany the story do have a manga air that I like a lot. In any case, the important thing is the story and not the format and in it we find Raptor, a boy "normal and ordinary?", who has as a pet a talking cat that seems to want to end him.

You can buy it here for 13.20 euros.

'Sparta and the secret of the lost island'

Although we will see other Compas in this story, the undisputed protagonist of this book is Sparta. A magical stone at the same time cursed awaits you after a lot of adventures. It will certainly be a dangerous journey that may be one-way...

Like the rest of the books in the Compas collection, it comes with illustrations that accompany the text. This time, in blue tones.

You can buy it here for 13.20 euros.

'Riusplay and the spell of the full moon'

Again we will have the invaluable help of Timba, Mike, Trolli and Invictor, although the protagonist is the chicken Rius. This time we have a magical story in which the werewolves make theirs and the Compas have to go out in search of the ingredients to make a magic potion and cure who has been attacked. The book has illustrations in red tones that help to enjoy reading more.

You can buy it here for 14.20 euros.

'Invictor and May in Search of the Lost Emerald'

We meet Invictor again in this book, this time accompanied by Mayo. Half of an emerald has been stolen and they have to try by all means not to join with their other half or the world will end up destroyed. To try to avoid it, they will have to face monsters, enchantments and traps. Like the rest of the books, they have color illustrations, this time, purple.

You can buy it here for 14.20 euros.

'ARTA in the ultimate apocalypse of Arta Game'

We leave the Compas to talk about Arta, another content creator with a collection of books. This is one of Iker's last readings and when he finished it he told me that I could read it if I wanted, that I was going to like it. With such a recommendation I could do nothing but read it. The end of the world is approaching and Arta receives a call from her father to go get on a rocket that will take him out of Earth, since a lot of bugs are invading her. An adventure book where he will have to look, not only for himself, but for the rest of the people he meets along the way.

You can buy it here for 14.20 euros.

The Hunger Games

Here we find one of the most famous dystopias of recent times. A society divided into districts that is forced to send a boy and a girl every year to games in which only one player can remain. Katniss, the protagonist, cannot afford to die because she is the one who supports her family, so she is willing to everyone, but what is not expected is that her actions in the games are the beginning of a revolution that will affect the whole society.

I loved this trilogy, I can't say anything else. It is for young readers, yes, not for children.
