This was stated by Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev.

"Why did this happen? Because the leadership rested on its laurels, lost touch with reality, could not manage political and economic processes, held out and also got into a very difficult situation because of the position of our opponents, "Medvedev said in an interview with leading Russian media, including RIA Novosti.

He noted that "no one expected the collapse of the Soviet Union."

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the destruction of the world balance along with the collapse of the USSR.

Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov expressed the opinion that the collapse of the USSR could have been avoided if the Soviet people had more vigorously defended their interests.
