Since Skellefteå Airport became municipal in 2010, the air traffic control tower has been manned by the company ACR.

Here, air traffic controllers are on site in the tower to direct air traffic.

The latest procurement for air traffic control was made in 2019 and is valid for the period 2020-2028.

It was made together with four other municipal airports.

Then, among others, the Norwegian Civil Aviation Authority and Saab's jointly owned company SDATS with remote air traffic control tendered.

But it was ACR with air traffic controllers on site that won the tender at a significantly cheaper price.

- Then it was quite easy to make allocation decisions on it, says Robert Lindberg.

The price decides

For Robert Lindberg, it's not about remote air traffic control being a worse alternative.

Ultimately, it comes down to cost.

At the same time, he sees an advantage with manned flight towers.

- Based on the fact that we are a municipal company, it is interesting that there are people on site who pay tax, but that is not something we take into account in the result, he says.
