The service, which is a voluntary add-on and is called Meta Verified, means that after verifying your account using an identity document, you get a blue verification symbol on your account.

The cost of the add-on, writes Zuckeberg, will be 11.99 dollars for those who pay via the web or 14.99 via Apple's operating system IOS.

The verification service is being rolled out in Australia and New Zealand next week and "additional countries are expected in the near future," the post said.

Social media rival Twitter launched a similar paid verification service shortly after Elon Musk took over the company last year.
