Five people were killed in a gas explosion in a residential building in the town of Efremov, Tula region.

The incident took place in house number 2 on Khimikov Street.

As a result of the explosion, the first entrance collapsed.

42 people and 12 pieces of equipment are working at the emergency site.

“Rescuers have started clearing the rubble and carrying out search operations,” the Ministry of Emergency Situations said.

After the collapse of the entrance, four people remain under the rubble, seven were rescued, the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported.

Alexey Pavlov, head of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia for the region, on the air of the Russia 24 TV channel, announced the involvement of additional forces in the amount of 100 people.

“At this moment, we are carrying out emergency rescue operations.

The prosecutor's office of the Tula region began an investigation into the collapse of part of the house in Efremov.

On behalf of the prosecutor of the region, an inspection of the implementation of legislation in the field of housing and communal services was organized in connection with the explosion of domestic gas.

The prosecutor is at the scene and coordinates the work of operational and rescue services.

“On behalf of the regional prosecutor, an inspection of the implementation of legislation in the housing and communal services sector was organized, related to the domestic gas explosion in an apartment building in the city of Efremov,” the regional prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

A criminal case has been initiated on the provision of services that do not meet safety requirements, the Investigative Committee of Russia reported.

The main cause of the explosion was a malfunction of gas equipment, TASS reports with reference to emergency services.

The authorities of the Tula region will provide financial support to the families of the dead, injured and lost their homes.

“Now the main task is to provide all necessary assistance to the victims.
